About COLA

COLA as Advocates...
For over twenty years, COLA has supported Rhode Island libraries. In 1982 President Reagan proposed zero funding for libraries in the federal budget. Our members sent petitions with thousands of names to protest the cut. This was the first action in a long history of advocacy for COLA, whose members have gone on to testify at Congressional hearings, make hundreds of phone calls, and communicate with legislators. COLA also played a major role in helping to pass the Rhode Island Constitutional Amendment mandating state support of public libraries. At the state level, COLA has supported libraries whenever support was needed.

COLA Educates...
COLA's mission includes educating the public about the services Rhode Island libraries have to offer. We sponsor educational programs and training sessions, host cultural programs at libraries, and provide two scholarships to the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at URI.

COLA as a Catalyst for Communication...
COLA has been a catalyst for inter-group communication since its founding. Once a loose "organization of organizations," COLA now fosters communication among various groups as an incorporated, non-profit coalition. These efforts have brought together members of the library community, educators, professionals, parents, and students. COLA's membership has grown to over 4,000 individuals, libraries, organizations, and members of Friends' groups.

COLA thanks you...
Each year, COLA acknowledges those who support its mission with the coveted Sweetheart of the Year Award, with a reception held at the state capital in February.
